By 8:15 a.m., sixteen Saginaw Valley Master Gardeners boarded the luxury tour bus.  Our first stop was a tour at Bordines Plant Farm in Grand Blanc. Plant shopping opportunities were a treat for those early gardener shoppers who were anxious to buy a plant already.

The Bordine’s Farm in Grand Blanc has seen incredible growth over the last decade. This 100 acre site is where Bordines grows the majority of their high quality plants. Retail is open there starting in April until October.  Other interesting facts you may not know about this farm are:

*There are more than 1 million square feet of greenhouse growing space!

*Some of Bordines greenhouses are highly specialized, allowing the grower to control the smallest of details to optimize growth. The advanced technology includes humidity controls, computer controlled supplemental lighting, reverse osmosis water purification and automatic fertilizer injectors.

*Bordines propagates more than 15 million seedlings a year.

*Bordines grows about 95% of our own annuals and perennials.

*A little over 15 acres is used for outdoor growing.

*We grow 60% of our own trees and shrubs.

*We employ about 275 people at the peak of our season.

Afterwards, our group dined and refreshed at a local eatery.  Our next destination stop was Krupps Novelty Statues on M-13.  We viewed statuary as far as the eye could see from traditional to unique and unusual themes.  Once again, many of us were enthralled with design possibilities in our spring gardens.
